| Relinquishing the Need to be Needy
This whole concept, though visited at other times in my life, echoed again quite strongly yesterday morning. I had just completed my yoga practice and Bo, my 90 lb. golden retriever was as close as he could get without actually joining in on the poses. When he knew I was done, the tail began its wild wagging, the paws 'tapped' me to gain his full attention, and two huge brown eyes gazed at me adoringly. I looked back in those eyes and said to him, "Bo, I love you so much but I don't want you to NEED me. And I don't want to NEED you. I want us to be there for one another but complete in who we are."

Embrace the mountain within. |

Okay, for those of you who may not be quite so enamored with the furry part of our population, you might think I'm a little nuts for having such a philosophical conversation with my canine. But the truth of the matter is, it goes way beyond that.
It was such a deep knowing revealing itself in that moment, that only in becoming whole and complete within ourselves can we ever really totally allow another into our existence in a heartfelt manner. When we 'need' someone, there is a feeling of attachment, that without their presence we are somehow lacking.
This not only undermines the beauty of the relationship, it also tends to separate rather than enhance the union. How much more attractive we become on all levels when we offer an aura of balance and peace within.
If you find yourself lacking in stability, I would suggest the following mudra (or hand yoga) position. Prithivi Mudra (or earth mudra) is formed by bringing your ring finger and thumb together, the other fingers open and relaxed. Exerting gentle pressure between them will bring feelings of security and groundedness, allowing you to walk the earth with a sense of belonging. Along with the mudra, you may also wish to affirm the following: "I am grounded, protected and all of my need are met."
We all go through times in life when we feel out of balance and turn to those close to us to regain equilibrium. It is a beautiful gift to have such a resource and when such heartfelt sharing occurs, it returns us to the fullness of who we are. Savor those exchanges but always remember that you are whole and complete within YOU. Each of us walks this path deserving all the joy life has to offer and this begins inside us. (Bo just looked at me, smiled wide, and agreed. Not that I NEED his endorsement, but it's nice to know he's on board.)
Bottom line: trust in and believe in you. Wishing you stability, balance and inner peace. |
(Thought I'd leave up the reminder to spread your wings...)
